Torrita di Siena is getting ready for a truly special edition: the Palio dei Somari reaches this year the milestone of its 70th edition, an anniversary that turns the traditional June festival into a moment of collective celebration, memory and pride for the entire community.
Born as a tongue-in-cheek response to the famous Palio di Siena, the donkey race of Torrita di Siena has over time built its own authentic and unique identity. Every year the eight Contrade of the village compete with passion, drawing in residents, enthusiasts and visitors alike in an atmosphere that blends competition, folklore and community spirit.
This year's programme kicks off on 28 May with an official presentation evening at the Teatro Parrocchiale Il Convento, during which the book "I Pittori del Palio" will also be presented — a volume dedicated to 60 years of art tied to the event. In the days that follow, there will be shows, historical re-enactments, evenings at the taverns, flag-wavers and drummers' performances, film screenings and entertainment for all ages.
What makes this edition even more extraordinary is the Palio Straordinario 2026, taking place on the evening of 6 June at the Gioco del Pallone. An event added to the traditional calendar that promises exceptional excitement, featuring the historical procession of the Contrade, the ceremonial entrance of the Palio and the race that will crown the winning Contrada.
Whether you are a first-time visitor or a long-time fan, the Palio dei Somari is one of those events that stays with you. A medieval village, eight Contrade, a few stubborn donkeys and 70 years of history: everything you need for an unforgettable celebration.
